Curator/Collections Manager

McKissick Museum, University of South Carolina
Columbia, SC

McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina is seeking to fill its position of Curator/Collections Manager position. The Museum is a unit within the College of Arts and Science and is an important part of the University’s goal to achieve excellence in teaching, research, and service. McKissick’s primary focus is on multidisciplinary projects that interpret regional culture and the environment. It presents six to eight original exhibitions each year based on the Museum’s diverse and extensive collections and/or on academic research initiatives.

Job duties: Coordinates scheduling, d ocumentation and registration activities in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition and collection departments. Supervises the loan of objects and artifacts, performs or oversees related legal and registration duties, maintains database, and teaches when requested in the Museum Management program.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in history, museology or related field; or Bachelor’s degree in history, museology, or a related field and 2 years related experience.

Skills and Knowledge: Specialized academic knowledge in one of the Museum’s collecting disciplines. Knowledgeable about evaluation techniques for condition, preservation, storage and exhibition of objects; knowledge of accepted museum registration techniques, legal matters related to loans of objects and policies relating to photographic rights & reproduction; knowledge of proper object handling, installation and packing techniques, and transportation methods applicable to museum objects. Knowledgeable about records management, collections databases, and graphic programs. Must have excellent communication skills. Must be able to walk up and down stairs, climb ladders and lift up to 40 pounds. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
